Having the right documents ready avoids delay at the loading point and on the road. The requirements can change, so please confirm the current rules for your case, and ask your transporter or your accountant.
For household goods
- An identity proof of the person who owns the goods
- Address proof or a rental agreement for the new address, which some societies ask for
- A list of the goods, which your mover can help you prepare
- The booking confirmation and the contact number of the transporter
For business goods
- Invoice or bill for the goods, with correct names, addresses and GST numbers
- E-way bill, where it is required under the GST rules. It is generally needed for the movement of goods above a prescribed value, so please check the current rules.
- Transport receipt (often called LR or consignment note) issued by the transporter
- Any permits or licences that apply to special goods
For cars and bikes
- Registration certificate (RC)
- Insurance copy
- Your identity proof, and an authorisation letter if someone else hands over the vehicle
- Photographs of the vehicle before loading
Keep copies, and keep them safe
Keep photocopies or photos of every document on your phone, and keep the originals with you. Do not pack them in the truck.
Common mistakes
- Wrong or missing GST numbers on the invoice
- An incomplete delivery address or a missing phone number of the receiver
- Not having the e-way bill ready before the truck leaves
- Not keeping the transport receipt safe until the delivery is complete
