Fragile items break not because the journey is long, but because they are packed with too little cushioning, or in boxes that are too large or too weak. A few simple rules will protect them.
Gather the right materials
- Strong, new or good-condition cartons of small and medium size
- Bubble wrap, foam sheets and clean packing paper (avoid newspaper ink on white items)
- Strong packing tape and a marker
- Soft items such as towels and clothes as filling
Plates, glasses and crockery
- Wrap each item separately in paper or bubble wrap.
- Place a layer of cushioning at the bottom of the carton.
- Pack plates standing on their edge, like records, and not flat in a pile.
- Put glasses and cups upright, with paper inside as well, and the heaviest at the bottom.
- Fill all the gaps and add a layer on top, then seal and mark the carton fragile on all sides.
Photo frames, mirrors and paintings
Put tape across the glass in a cross pattern, which helps hold the pieces together if it cracks. Wrap the item in bubble wrap, add corner guards or folded cardboard, and pack it standing on its edge, never flat.
Televisions and electronics
- If you still have the original box and foam, use them. They are designed for the device.
- Otherwise, wrap the screen in a soft layer and then in bubble wrap, and pack it upright in a strong carton, with cushioning on all sides.
- Keep cables, remotes and adapters in a bag, and tape or label it with the name of the device.
- Take a photograph of the cable connections before you disconnect them, which helps in setting up again.
Lamps, decor and ornaments
Remove bulbs and shades, and pack them separately. Wrap delicate decor items individually, and place them in a carton with enough padding, without letting them touch each other.
Labelling and loading
Mark each carton with the room and the word FRAGILE, and with an arrow showing the upright side. Tell the loaders about fragile cartons, so that they are placed on top of other goods and never underneath.
