Hiring packers and movers is a matter of trust, because you hand over everything you own. A few checks before you decide can save you from delay, damage and disputes.
1. Visit the office or check the address
A company with a real office is easier to approach if something goes wrong. Check the address, and if possible, visit and meet the people.
2. Take more than one quote
Get at least two or three quotes, and compare what each includes. A very low quote may leave out packing material, labour, unloading or tolls, and appear in the final bill as extra charges.
3. Ask for a written quote
The quote should mention the type of vehicle, the services included, and any extra charges that may apply, such as waiting time or extra floors.
4. Check business documents
A genuine company can show its GST registration and other business documents. Ask for them, and keep a copy of the booking confirmation.
5. Ask about packing material and staff
Ask which materials are used and whether the packers are trained. Good packing is the best protection for your goods.
6. Ask about the vehicle
Check that the vehicle is of the right size, and that it is the one actually sent on the day. Do not accept a smaller vehicle on the day of the move.
7. Understand the liability and insurance
Ask what happens if an item is damaged or lost, and what insurance options are available. Also check what your own policy covers.
8. Check how they handle delivery
Ask how you will be informed about the progress of a long-distance move, and who will be present at the delivery.
9. Read the terms before paying
Read the booking terms, and ask about cancellation and rescheduling. Pay an advance only against a receipt, and pay the balance only after delivery, as agreed.
10. Trust your experience of the first conversation
A good company answers questions patiently, explains the options honestly and does not pressure you. If the first conversation feels rushed or unclear, look for another company.
