Moving a car to another city on a carrier saves you the long drive and the wear on the vehicle. To make sure that it goes well, it helps to know how the service works and what to check.
How car transport works
The car is driven on to a carrier, secured with straps on its wheels and body, and moved by road to the destination. At the other end, it is unloaded, and you check it before you take the delivery. Some customers send the car along with their household goods, and some send it separately.
Questions to ask the transporter
- What type of carrier is used, and how many cars are carried on it?
- How is the car secured, and who is responsible for it during the journey?
- What is included in the price, and what is not, such as pick-up from your home and delivery to your door?
- What happens in case of damage, and what insurance is available?
- How will the delivery date be communicated, and who will be present at the delivery?
Before loading
- Wash the car, so that scratches and dents can be seen clearly during inspection.
- Take photographs of all sides, the roof, the interior and the odometer.
- Remove valuables and loose items. Personal belongings inside the car are generally not covered.
- Keep only a small quantity of fuel, as advised by the transporter.
- Keep copies of the registration certificate, insurance papers and your identity proof.
- Check your own motor insurance policy and ask what it covers during transport.
At loading
Inspect the car together with the transporter's representative, and note existing damage on the loading receipt. Make sure that you get a copy with the contact numbers.
At delivery
- Inspect the car in good light, comparing it with your photographs and the loading receipt.
- Check the odometer reading, and start the car to see that it works normally.
- If you see damage, note it on the delivery receipt before you sign, and inform the transporter immediately.
